Steam Play is a feature that allows you to run compatibility layers in the Linux version of the Steam client. Proton being one of them, based upon another called Wine, allowing you to play thousands of Windows-only games on Linux. Be sure to check out our constantly updated beginner's guide here.
- Steam Play now officially supports a limited but growing set of 'whitelisted' games that are deemed Proton-compatible and play on Linux. Based on ProtonDB reports, a significant number of non-whitelisted games, including many popular titles, play just as well as on Windows. Why is this a big deal?
- Steam Play and Proton represent a massive leap forward for Linux gamers. Valve has committed to making Windows games playable on Linux for everyone without the hassle of configuring something like Wine. So, they did it for everyone, with Proton, Steam’s own version of Wine.
- Play your Steam games on your phone, tablet, TV, or other PC. With touch control schemes newly-optimized for hundreds of top titles, you can now access and play games from your PC while on the couch, or on the go. Many Steam games are already optimized for your devices.
- Steam is the most popular game client on PCs, and its newest feature, quietly released in November, is called Remote Play Together. It lets people play local multiplayer games over the internet.

Neither currently work or are supported with Proton.
